 Munnar
is a beautiful hill station located in the
Idukki district of Kerala. This small hill
station exemplifies all the qualities s
of a perfect holiday destination. The town
f Munnar is situated among the confluence
of three rivers. The place s is surrounded
by hills. It is a destination which is a
must visit if your are on a visit to Kerala.
Munnar receives a lot of rain which is natural
as the Idukki district is known for its
rainy climate. The beauty of the places
is the calmness and serenity of the place
which is almost undisturbed.
Much of the popularity of Munnar can be
credited to the British as they developed
it into a summer destination and building
a lot of Coffee and tea plantations here.
A lot of spices are also grown here. A lot
of cottages followed. A wide variety of
beautiful flowers and trees grow here to
the extent of it being called the Switzerland
of India. Tourism came up in a big way here
with several important chains of hotels
and restaurants making their presence felt
here. There are some exotic cottages and
hotels here of various budgets for tourist.
Trekking and wildlife watching are some
of the favorite pastimes that tourists indulge
in.
Perhaps the most famous features of Munnar
are the presence of the Nilgiri Tahr which
is endangered goat species in South India
and the beautiful flowers called the Neelakurinji
which blooms once in twelve years. The famous
tea plantations and bird and wildlife sanctuaries
are important attractions for tourists.
Reaching Munnar is not very difficult in
that the nearest airport is Nedumbassery
and the most prominent railway station being
Aluva station. There are several roadway
services to this destination. The very journey
towards Munnar is an enchanting experience.
