 Kovalam
is a famous name when it comes to beach
vacations. One of the outstanding sights
of natural beauty, Kovalam is often acknowledged
as the Paradise of the South. The fact that
Kovalam is very close to the capital city
of Thiruvanathapuram makes it accessible.
Kovalam used to be a small and unassuming
town earlier which was introduced to the
world by the then Maharaja of Travancore.
The eye-catching beauty of this crescent
shaped beach with endless coconut trees
of various sizes and shapes caught the imagination
of many and became a famous picnic spot.
The commercialization of Kovalam has taken
away some of its natural beauty, yet the
area has retained much of its charm.
Kovalam is famous for its sea food. The
exotic dishes prepared out of prawns, lobsters
and other varieties of fish make for a delectable
meal. The best part is that there is an
array of restaurants which also cater to
the western palette. The beach and the area
surrounding it are packed with Yoga therapy
centers, restaurants, handicraft shops and
so on. One can do a lot of shopping for
the typical Kerala handicrafts in these
shops.
The Kovalam beach is broadly divided into
three areas – the northern Samudra
which is very calm and not too crowded the
middle area or Hawah which is visually very
striking and used to be the hub for fishing
and then finally the most popular part which
is the southern beach, which is termed as
light house beach. The sight of the Vizhinjam
mosque from this area is beautiful and appealing.
Kovalam’s proximity to Trivandrum
makes it highly accessible by all modes
of transport. Trivandrum has an airport,
an excellent railway network and of course
a well connected network of roads with several
national highways.
