 Eravikulam
National Park - This National Park is
famous as the sanctuary for the preservation
of the Nilgiri Tahr. One can also see the
Anamudi peak that towers over this sanctuary.
The nearest airport is Kochi, railway station
being Aluva. Nilgiri Tahr, Atlas Moth is
the major attraction here.
Periyar Tiger Reserve - This is perhaps
the most famous wildlife sanctuaries in
the country and attracts tourists and nature
lovers from far and wide. It is also called
the Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary, this place
is ideal for watching the animals in their
natural habitat. Elephants, Gaur, Sambhar
and even tigers can be spotted on the man
made lake created here. Other attractions
of the sanctuary are the Sambhar, Bison,
Spotted Deer, Tigers, Leopards, Malabar
Flying Squirrels, Stripe necked Mongooses,
etc. There are also a huge variety of birds
here like the Nilgiri Wood Pigeons, blue-winged
Parakeets; White bellied Tree Pies, laughing
Thrushes and Fly Catchers.
Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary - This
famous bird sanctuary is located near Kothamangalam.
Some of the common birds seen here include
rare birds like the Crimson-Throated Barbet,
Bee-eater, Sunbird, Shrike, Black winged
Kite and the Night Heron are also commonly
sighted. One would have to go to Kochi for
the airport or Aluva for the nearest railwaytstaion.
Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary - Wayanad
Wildlife Sanctuary, 15 kms from Calicut.
The main attractions here are Giant Squirrel,
Tiger, Leopard.. The place is characterized
by thick forests. The nearest airport and
railway station is Calicut.
