Kerala is a naturally
blessed land with a huge number of beaches,
rivers and backwaters, lagoons and lakes.
There are many famous lakes in Kerala which
are main tourist centers. Some of the popular
lakes in Kerala are as follows
Sasthamkotta Lake- The Sasthamkotta Lake
is located about thirty km from Kollam
or Quilon. It is a beautiful fresh water
lake and is often referred to as the queen
of lakes in Kerala.
Vembanad Lake- The Vembanad Lake is the
largest lake in Kerala and runs parallel
to the river. The Vembanad Lake covers
a distance of about 260 sq km.
The Ashtamudi Lake- The Ashtamudi Lake
is the second largest lake in Kerala and
runs almost perpendicular to the river.
It has eight channels. The Ashtamudi Lake
is about 16 km in length with the Kalladayar
River flowing to it and through the Neendakara
estuary the lake enters the sea.
Akkulam Lake- The Akkulam Lake is located
near the capital of Kerala – Thiruvananthapuram.
There is a boat club in the banks of the
lake where one could hire the best of
boats. Boating is an important pass recreational
activity for tourists arriving here.
Pookode Lake lies between Lakkidi and
Pookode. Several boating facilities are
available here. The lake s surrounded
with a lot of greenery in the form of
forests.
